Potassium Monopersulfate Compound (KMPS): Overview and Uses

What is  potassium peroxymonosulfate complex salt

Potassium peroxymonosulfate complex salt is a compound formed by combining potassium hydrogen sulfate, potassium bisulfate, and potassium sulfate.

Potassium hydrogen peroxomonosulfate, also known as potassium peroxymonosulfate or potassium monopersulfate, is a compound formed by combining potassium hydrogen sulfate (KHSO4) with potassium persulfate (K2S2O8) or potassium bisulfate (KHSO4). It is a free-flowing white powder that is readily soluble in water, with a solubility of over 250 g/L at 20°C. The active substance is potassium hydrogen peroxomonosulfate (KHSO5), which exhibits powerful and effective non-chlorine oxidizing properties. It is relatively stable under normal conditions but can undergo decomposition reactions at temperatures above 65°C. Potassium peroxomonosulfate is highly reactive and is used as an oxidizing agent, bleaching agent, catalyst, etchant, and more. In the industry, it is referred to as "a perfect combination of strong oxidizing power and safety."

Characteristics:

It is a unique three-effect-in-one complex salt composed of two molecules of potassium hydrogen peroxomonosulfate (KHSO5), one molecule of potassium hydrogen sulfate (KHSO4), and one molecule of potassium sulfate (K2SO4).It is an efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly acidic peroxide oxidant.Abbreviations: PMPS or KMPS.

  • Molecular formula: 2KHSO5•KHSO4•K2SO4
  • Molecular weight: 614.7
  • CAS No. 70693-62-8

Advantages:

  • Can be used under various weather, temperature, organic matter, water quality, and pH conditions.
  • Environmentally friendly: Easily decomposes without leaving residues.

Main Mechanisms of Action:

  • Potassium peroxomonosulfate has an oxidation-reduction potential of up to 1.85V, surpassing many oxidants such as sodium percarbonate, sodium hypochlorite, and potassium permanganate.
  • The potassium peroxomonosulfate + catalyst system generates highly oxidative sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals, with oxidation-reduction potentials reaching as high as 2.5~3.1 V and 2.8 V respectively.
  • Releases active oxygen in water at room temperature, increasing the dissolved oxygen in the bottom water and raising the redox potential of water.
  • Produces various high-energy, highly active small molecule radicals, reactive oxygen species, and derivatives that oxidize chloride ions in seawater.
  • Oxidizes ferrous ions to ferric ions, manganous ions to manganese dioxide, nitrites to nitrates, and hydrogen sulfide to sulfates in water bodies.
  • Decomposes carcinogens such as chloramines generated by the use of chlorine-containing products, activating chlorine.
  • Purifies water quality through chelation, adsorption, and ion exchange to reduce heavy metal ions in water bodies.

Main Application Areas:

Organic synthesis, especially in the field of new drug synthesis: Used as an initiator for latex or acrylic monomer polymerization, copolymerization initiator for vinyl acetate, chloroethylene, styrene, acrylonitrile, butadiene, etc.

  • Soil improvement and remediation.
  • Pre-oxidation, disinfection, and wastewater treatment in tap water treatment/sewage treatment/pool and SPA water treatment.
  • Micro-etchant in the electronics industry.
  • Wood cleaning/paper industry/food industry/wool shrinkage treatment.
  • Cosmetics and daily chemicals.
